That build-up is what stops a chimney drawing properly, and it is what a chimney fire feeds on. Most of the homes we visit have never had a photograph taken inside their own flue.

Every photograph below came off a real job. Most homeowners have never seen the inside of their own flue, so here is what tends to be waiting up there.
Jackdaw nest
Fumes indoorsJackdaws nest in open chimneys through the spring. A nest packs the flue with twigs, and once the draw is gone the fumes have nowhere to go but into the room.
Soot fall
No drawSoot that has come loose and collected behind the insert. The fire was still being lit while the flue was choking itself shut.
Cracked pot
Needs repairA split clay pot lets flue gases into the brickwork and rain into the flue. Irish winters open the crack a little wider every year until the pot has to be replaced.
Failed capping
Needs repairThe concrete cap on the stack has broken up and the liner underneath is open to the weather. This is rebuilding work, not sweeping, and it only gets dearer if it is left.
